Re:Discover Barrow

Revitalising our High Street

The face of England’s high streets are changing; Re discover Barrow is a project to regenerate Duke Street through Historic England’s High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) scheme.

The project will include physical improvements to properties, such as reinstating historic shopfronts and repairs to windows, roofs, gutters and other original features. There will also be works to improve public areas around Duke Street to offer more leisure space and increase dwell time.

There will also be a series of events allowing local residents to reconnect with the culture and history of the area, and allow building owners and professionals to gain experience in traditional heritage skills.

The Duke Street HSHAZ

The Duke Street HSHAZ is located within the Central Barrow Conservation Area, which was recorded by Historic England as a Conservation Area at risk in 2018.

Barrow Borough Council have been successful in securing £1.1m of funding through the HSHAZ scheme with further funding being provided by the Council and third party funders.

Business owners or tenants will be able to apply for grants to reinstate lost architectural features, for building repairs and bringing vacant floor space back into use.
